Dustin Higginbotham, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Kentucky 2023

Dustin Higginbotham, 33, of London, Ky., is going away for 20 years after being sentenced Tuesday for possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine — a conviction rooted in the discovery of more than half a kilo of 100% pure crystal meth from his residence.

U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove handed down the sentence after Higginbotham pleaded guilty in July 2017 to the federal charge. In court, he admitted to possessing more than 50 grams of actual methamphetamine with plans to distribute — a threshold that triggers mandatory minimum sentencing under federal law.

The bust came during a coordinated raid when law enforcement executed a search warrant at Higginbotham’s home. Inside, agents with the DEA Task Force – London, Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, and Williamsburg Police Department uncovered 564.6 grams of pure methamphetamine — a stash with street value that could reach tens of thousands of dollars.

Higginbotham will serve 85 percent of his 20-year sentence before becoming eligible for release — meaning he must spend at least 17 years behind bars. Upon release, he’ll face a decade of strict federal supervision under the United States Probation Office.

The case was jointly announced by Robert M. Duncan, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Chris Evans, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration; John Root, Laurel County Sheriff; and Wayne Bird, Williamsburg Chief of Police — a rare unified front highlighting the regional impact of the arrest.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Trimble prosecuted the case on behalf of the federal government, underscoring the DOJ’s ongoing crackdown on high-potency drug trafficking in rural Appalachia, where meth and opioids continue to fuel cycles of addiction and crime.
