The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina is teaming up with the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association (SCLEOA) to host the P.A.C.E. (Police and Community Engagement) Conference in Aiken on November 5-6, 2015.
According to United States Attorney Bill Nettles, the goal of this conference is to provide both the community and law enforcement with an understanding of their roles in 21st Century policing. The conference will include a plenary session with both law enforcement and members of the community, as well as sessions on verbal communications skills, community partnerships, and successful joint efforts between the community and law enforcement.
The Aiken Safe Communities Initiative, which was launched in early 2013, is a unified, proactive community approach to engage, educate, and encourage recurring offenders to change their behavior and make healthy life choices. The initiative has seen significant results, including an 86% reduction in murders from 2012-2013 and the presentation of the 2014 Award of Excellence from the South Carolina Community Development Association.
“The P.A.C.E. Conference is an opportunity for law enforcement and the community to come together and work towards a common goal – keeping our communities safe,” said Nettles. “We are proud to be a part of this effort and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community.”
