Lawanda Rogers, Unlawful Transfer of Firearms to a Prohibited Person, Illinois 2022

A 31-year-old Urbana woman was sentenced to six months in prison for her role in transferring firearms to prohibited persons.

Lawanda Rogers (formerly Moore) was sentenced on July 12, 2022, for unlawfully transferring firearms to prohibited persons.

According to the government, Rogers lawfully purchased four firearms, which were eventually seized from two felons during subsequent investigations.

One of the firearms was seized from Rogers’ husband in a hotel room along with narcotics in October 2015. Three other firearms were seized from Rogers’ boyfriend in November 2018 and June 2019, during drug investigations. One of the firearms was used in a shooting in Champaign.

At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Michael M. Mihm emphasized the seriousness of Rogers’ conduct, noting the danger of buying firearms to provide them to those unable to lawfully purchase them.

Rogers pleaded guilty to the charges. Unlawful transfer of a firearm to a prohibited person carries a statutory penalty of up to ten years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Ritzer stated that the case demonstrates the accountability for those who purchase firearms for others, and that the sentence is a step forward in the fight against gun violence.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Champaign Street Crimes Task Force, and the Champaign Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ritzer represented the government in the prosecution.
