A Lawrence man has been slapped with serious federal charges for his alleged involvement in a massive cocaine conspiracy.

Victor Berroa Mercedes, 31, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, stands accused of one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. If convicted, the Lawrence man faces up to 20 years in prison, at least three years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million.

According to a charging document, on May 4, 2024, Berroa Mercedes allegedly met with a cooperating source and accepted delivery of 32 kilograms of suspected cocaine in a Woburn parking lot. When attempting to flee from officers, he dropped a plastic bag containing $32,800 in cash, which he was immediately apprehended for.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation include the Boston Police, Massachusetts State Police, and Illinois State Police.
