MIAMI – Two Indian River County men have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a methamphetamine and fentanyl trafficking operation in Indian River County, Florida.
Lawrence Oliver Irving II, 38, and Tyrell Murry Bennett, 37, were sentenced on January 12, 2023 after pleading guilty to participating in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, and distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
According to court documents, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted an undercover operation from July 2022 to April 2023, during which an undercover officer purchased cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and other illicit substances from the defendants.
Irving distributed over six ounces of methamphetamine and 47 grams of fentanyl, while Bennett distributed or possessed with the intent to distribute over a kilogram of methamphetamine and 75 grams of fentanyl.
U.S. District Judge Robin L. Rosenberg sentenced Irving to 215 months in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release. Bennett was sentenced to 150 months in prison, also followed by 5 years of supervised release.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Even in small doses, fentanyl can be deadly, with as little as 2 milligrams being fatal.
The investigation was conducted by the DEA Miami Field Division and the IRCSO. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Porter and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Diana Acosta prosecuted the case.
