Lead, South Dakota man faces serious charges after being indicted for possessing two unregistered firearms.
A federal grand jury indicted Archie Roberts, 28, on December 16, 2014, for Possession of an Unregistered Firearm. Roberts appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on February 4, 2015, and pled not guilty to the indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The charge stems from Roberts’ possession of two sawed-off shotguns on September 30, 2014, in Lead. The sawed-off shotguns were not registered to him.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Lead Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case.
Roberts was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has been set for April 14, 2015. Roberts is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
While the case is still ongoing, this serves as a reminder of the importance of gun safety and regulation. The public is advised to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Lead Police Department are urging anyone with information regarding this case to come forward.
