San Diego Felon Gets 5 Years for Trafficking Firearms

A San Diego man has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a firearms trafficking ring, federal authorities announced.

Jeremy Michael Benner, 40, of San Diego, was sentenced to five years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for unlawfully dealing in firearms, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert said.

Betweeen September 2022 and August 2023, Benner sold firearms to a confidential informant on four separate occasions in Vallejo, California. One of the firearms had previously been reported stolen, and three of them came with extended magazines, authorities said.

Benner, a previously convicted felon, would not be qualified to obtain a license as a firearms dealer. The case was the product of an investigation by the FBI’s Solano County Violent Crimes Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian T. Kinsella prosecuted the case, which is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program. PSN aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities.

The Sacramento Region/San Francisco Bay Area Cross-Jurisdictional Firearms Trafficking Strike Force, which is part of PSN, was instrumental in disrupting Benner’s firearms trafficking operation. The strike force uses data, evidence, and intelligence to identify patterns and leads in violent gun crimes, and is an important part of the Department’s Comprehensive Violent Crime Reduction Strategy.

Benner’s conviction and sentence are a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies working together to combat firearms trafficking and make communities safer. As the Department continues to crack down on violent crime, it’s clear that those who seek to profit from it will face stiff penalties.
