LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Ethan Erhardt, 37, of Las Vegas, admitted in federal court today to buying ten semi-automatic rifles as a straw purchaser, funneling high-powered weapons to a third party who couldn’t legally buy them himself. The transaction, valued at approximately $88,000, cut through federal firearms laws like a loaded round through paper.
On February 16, 2019, Erhardt walked into a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) store in Henderson, Nevada, handed over the cash — not his own — and signed an ATF form swearing he was the true buyer. He lied. Every signature, every check, every rifle he loaded into his vehicle was done on behalf of someone else, knowing full well the guns would vanish into the underground market.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives led the investigation, tracking the purchase and unraveling the scheme. Straw purchases like this one don’t just break the law — they arm criminals, bypass background checks, and feed the black-market pipeline that floods streets with untraceable firepower. Erhardt’s actions put a direct line between cash and carnage.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Clarkson is prosecuting the case. Erhardt now faces up to ten years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine when sentenced by U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan on November 13, 2020. The court will weigh the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors, but the message is clear: the feds are watching.
This case falls under Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s nationwide crackdown on gun crimes. Launched in fall 2019, the initiative targets illegal firearm trafficking, boosts coordination between law enforcement agencies, and tracks denied gun purchases — especially those blocked due to mental health or criminal history. Erhardt’s case is exactly what the program was built to stop.
Project Guardian aims to dismantle the networks that allow guns to slip from dealers into dangerous hands. Erhardt may have thought he was just running a favor. Instead, he’s now a convicted federal felon — a warning to others who treat gun laws like loopholes instead of lifelines.
