A Herrin man faces federal time after being caught with more than half a kilo of cocaine. Leon S. Johnson, 40, was indicted on November 8, 2016, on a single count of possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of cocaine, according to U.S. Attorney Donald S. Boyce for the Southern District of Illinois.
The charge stems from an incident on November 4, 2016, in Williamson County, where authorities allegedly found the large narcotics haul. The indictment was unsealed days later, and Johnson made his first appearance in federal court on November 15, 2016. He was immediately ordered held without bond, locked up pending a January 17, 2017, jury trial.
This is no minor possession rap. Possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine carries a federal sentence of 5 to 40 years behind bars. On top of that, Johnson could face 4 years of supervised release and a $5,000,000 fine if convicted.
The investigation that led to Johnson’s arrest was a multi-agency push. The Southern Illinois Enforcement Group led the charge, backed by the Herrin Police Department, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Critical support also came from the Williamson County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois National Guard.
A grand jury returned the indictment, meaning prosecutors presented enough evidence to justify criminal charges. But under federal law, Leon S. Johnson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
The case underscores the ongoing federal crackdown on mid-level drug traffickers in southern Illinois. With nearly a pound of cocaine allegedly in play, authorities are treating this as a major distribution-level offense. The trial, set for January 17, 2017, will determine whether Johnson walks or spends years in federal prison.
