A devastating case of fentanyl trafficking has come to a close with a harsh sentence for the Akron man responsible. Leroy Shuarod Steele, a 36-year-old resident of Akron, Ohio, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in distributing fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose.
The tragic event occurred on March 21, 2016, when a person identified as T.R. succumbed to the deadly effects of the fentanyl. According to court documents, Steele obtained the fentanyl from suppliers in China and distributed it to individuals in Akron, Fairlawn, and other areas.
The case against Steele began with his guilty plea to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and distribution of fentanyl earlier this year. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and law enforcement agencies worked tirelessly to bring Steele to justice, with the Drug Enforcement Agency, Akron Police Department, and Fairlawn Police Department contributing to the investigation.
“Mr. Steele’s actions resulted in the death of another person,” said Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja. “Those who profit from selling the heroin and opioids that have devastated our state will be held accountable for their actions.”
Akron Police Chief James Nice echoed the sentiment, stating, “Keeping this guy behind bars for two decades keeps the residents of Summit County safer.”
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda H. Barr, who has worked diligently to ensure that Steele faces the consequences of his actions. As the investigation and prosecution come to a close, the community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that those responsible for the devastation caused by fentanyl will be held accountable.
