A former prison guard in Texas has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for engaging in a sordid affair with an inmate.
Leticia Martinez Garza, 59, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a ward in federal court in Del Rio, Texas, on May 4, 2016. By doing so, she admitted to having sexual intercourse with the inmate on multiple occasions between May 15, 2014, and September 18, 2014.
The abuse took place while Martinez Garza was employed as a Laundry, Property and Supply Supervisor at the GEO Corrections Val Verde Correction facility in Del Rio.
The case was the result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Marshals Service, and Homeland Security Investigations.
Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew Watters and Goran Krnaich prosecuted the case on behalf of the Government.
Martinez Garza’s sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs, San Antonio Division, and United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr., announced the sentencing.
The details of the case are a reminder that those in positions of authority have a responsibility to uphold the law and protect those in their care.
