SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – The grimy details of a disturbing crime have emerged as 57-year-old Thomas J. Joslin of North Syracuse, New York, faces serious charges for his alleged involvement in the theft of gift cards from the U.S. Mail.
Joslin, who worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service (USPS), has been indicted on three felony charges that carry the possibility of up to 15 years in prison and fines totaling $750,000 if convicted.
According to the indictment, Joslin is accused of stealing gift cards from multiple pieces of mail intended for delivery to other people between various dates in 2019. The allegations are serious, with each count potentially resulting in a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a supervised release term of up to three years.
United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Special Agent in Charge Matthew Modafferi from the USPS Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG) Northeast Area Field Office announced the charges against Joslin today.
This case is currently being investigated by the USPS-OIG, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael F. Perry handling the prosecution.
As always in criminal proceedings, Joslin is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the charges contained within the indictment are solely accusations at this time.
