Li Chen and Yu Zhou, Conspiracy to Commit Theft of Trade Secrets, California 2023

A gutless duo thought they could get away with stealing medical trade secrets and sharing them with China, but on March 30, a US federal judge brought them back down to earth.

Li Chen, 45, and Yu Zhou, 43, of Phoenix, Arizona, had their naturalized US citizenship revoked by Judge James E. Simmons Jr. of the US District Court for the Southern District of California. The married couple had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft of trade secrets and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Both charges are serious enough, but it gets worse.

The court found that Chen and Zhou’s crimes involved moral turpitude, which means they didn’t have the good moral character necessary to become naturalized citizens in the first place. And it gets even worse – the court determined that both Chen and Zhou committed unlawful acts that adversely reflected on their moral character, with no extenuating circumstances to speak of.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen naturalized citizens get caught up in serious crimes. It’s a reminder that anyone can make a mistake, but when those mistakes involve serious crimes like trade secrets theft, the consequences can be severe.

Li Chen and Yu Zhou are just the latest example of the dangers of unchecked ambition and greed. They thought they could get away with stealing sensitive information and selling it to the highest bidder, but in the end, justice caught up with them.

The US Department of Justice should be commended for its efforts in rooting out corruption and protecting America’s intellectual property. This case serves as a warning to anyone who thinks they can get away with serious crimes: the law is always watching, and justice will always be served.
