California Meth Man Gets 10 Years in Federal Prison
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gary Liberty, 52, of California, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced today for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation targeting West Virginia. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston following Liberty’s guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
The bust, a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team and the United States Postal Inspection Service, revealed a carefully orchestrated plan to move crystal meth from the West Coast to the Mountain State. Back in January 2012, Liberty connected with a confidential informant cooperating with law enforcement, agreeing to ship the drugs across the country. He didn’t bother with subtlety.
On January 5, 2012, Liberty flew into West Virginia, setting the stage for the delivery. The next day, he provided the informant with a tracking number for a package originating in California, destined for a Sissonville address. Law enforcement intercepted the package on January 7, 2012, uncovering over 80 grams of pure methamphetamine. Instead of backing off, Liberty pressed forward.
Officers then executed a controlled delivery, replacing the meth with a harmless substitute. When the informant took possession of the package, authorities moved in. They found Liberty at the residence, standing over the opened package with its contents spread out on a table. He immediately confessed his involvement in the drug trafficking scheme, sealing his fate.
“This sentence sends a clear message,” stated United States Attorney Carol Casto. “We will aggressively pursue those who seek to profit from the misery of others by flooding our communities with dangerous drugs.” Assistant United States Attorney Monica D. Coleman prosecuted the case, securing the 10-year sentence.
This case is part of a broader, ongoing initiative by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to dismantle illegal drug networks, specifically targeting methamphetamine, pill trafficking, and open-air drug markets. The office, alongside its federal, state, and local partners, remains committed to stemming the tide of illegal drugs across the region. Follow us on Twitter: SDWVNews.
