Nashville, TN – A decorated Army officer was busted for smuggling guns and violating the Arms Export Control Act.
Lieutenant Colonel Frank Ross Talbert, 40, a Fort Campbell explosive expert, was arrested on a 21-count indictment charging him with smuggling firearms parts, firearms trafficking, possession of machineguns, and other crimes.
The indictment alleges that Talbert smuggled defense articles from Russia and other countries without a license, dealt in firearms without a federal license, and possessed unregistered machineguns.
If convicted, Talbert faces a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $1,000,000.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brooke Farzad is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and Talbert is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The charges against Talbert are a serious breach of public trust, and the community expects the highest level of integrity from its leaders.
This case highlights the importance of effective law enforcement and the need for strict punishment for those who abuse their positions for personal gain.
