Travis Wicks, Gun Possession, District of Columbia 2024

A 57-month prison sentence has been handed down to Travis Wicks, 48, of Washington D.C., for possessing a modified Sig Sauer P-365 handgun and drum magazine loaded with 40 rounds of ammunition, along with a laser sight.

The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves; Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai, of the Washington Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Wicks pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year. This marks his fourth gun charge, with previous convictions resulting in voluntary manslaughter while armed and other violent behavior.

According to court documents, on May 1, 2023, MPD officers executed a search warrant at the Southeast Washington D.C. apartment where Wicks was known to stay. The search uncovered a range of incriminating evidence, including a Sig Sauer P-365 semi-automatic handgun with an obliterated serial number inserted into a rifle conversion kit, a drum-style magazine containing 40 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a black firearm laser sight.

Subsequent DNA analysis linked Wicks to the modified handgun, further solidifying the case against him. Wicks’ lengthy history of violent behavior, including a 2005 conviction for voluntary manslaughter while armed, contributed to the severity of his sentence.

Wicks will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence, bringing the total punishment to 60 months. The Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Yasmine Emrani and Cameron Tepfer handling the prosecution.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with a history of violent behavior and access to firearms. As the nation grapples with the complex issue of gun violence, cases like Wicks’ underscore the importance of strict enforcement of firearms laws and vigilant community policing.
