A former Jackson Township official has been charged with embezzling $170,000 from the township, authorities announced today.
Linda Baun, 72, of Largo, Florida, has been indicted on six counts of mail fraud, according to Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman.
The indictment alleges that Baun, who served as secretary and treasurer for Jackson Township in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, made unauthorized ATM withdrawals and online purchases using the township’s general fund between September 2011 and December 2019.
According to the indictment, Baun attempted to conceal her thefts by making false entries into the township’s QuickBooks accounting software.
Each count of mail fraud carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
The actual sentence imposed would be based on the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police conducted the investigation leading to the indictment.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
