Linda Sun, 41, Charged with Undisclosed Agent of China in Brooklyn
A high-ranking New York State government employee has been arrested and charged with acting as an undisclosed agent of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party.
Linda Sun, 41, and her husband Chris Hu, 40, were arrested earlier this morning and arraigned in federal court in Brooklyn. Sun is alleged to have acted on behalf of the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) while working for the New York State government.
According to court documents, Sun engaged in numerous political activities in the interests of the PRC and the CCP, including blocking representatives of the Taiwanese government from having access to high-level New York State officers, changing high-level New York State officers’ messaging regarding issues of importance to the PRC and the CCP, and obtaining official New York State proclamations for PRC government representatives without proper authorization.
Sun never registered as a foreign agent with the Attorney General and actively concealed that she was working on behalf of the Chinese government. She allegedly laundered millions of dollars for the foreign country and used the monetary benefits of this scheme to buy luxury vehicles and million-dollar properties in New York.
“As alleged, while appearing to serve the people of New York as Deputy Chief of Staff within the New York State Executive Chamber, the defendant and her husband actually worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace for Eastern District of New York.
Sun and Hu face serious charges, including violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, bringing in aliens, and money laundering conspiracy. The case highlights the brazen attempts of the PRC to corrupt our political processes and the FBI’s commitment to protecting our democratic institutions from manipulation.
