Lindani Mzembe, Kidnapping and Firearms Violation, IN 2023

Lindani Mzembe, 32, of South Bend, Indiana, is headed to federal prison for 528 months after being sentenced on charges of kidnapping, making a ransom demand, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, handed down by South Bend District Court Judge Robert Miller, Jr., marks the end of a violent criminal episode that left a man wounded and the community on edge.

According to court documents, Mzembe and two co-defendants—identified as Ivan Brazier and Derek Fields—unlawfully confined a victim at gunpoint, demanding a ransom for their release. The ordeal escalated when a firearm was discharged during the abduction, striking the victim. The shooting confirmed the volatile nature of the crime and triggered federal involvement under violent crime statutes.

Mzembe’s criminal conduct unfolded as part of a coordinated act of extortion and armed confinement. As convicted felons, all three men were prohibited from possessing firearms, yet they armed themselves to carry out the kidnapping. The presence and use of guns during the crime triggered enhanced federal penalties, including mandatory minimum sentences for firearm use in violent offenses.

Ivan Brazier and Derek Fields were each convicted in separate trials on identical charges: kidnapping, extortion, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. While Brazier has already been sentenced, Fields is scheduled to face sentencing on February 22, 2017, and could face a similarly severe prison term.

The investigation was a joint operation involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the South Bend Police Department, and the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit. Their combined efforts led to the swift identification and arrest of the suspects, with forensic evidence and witness testimony sealing convictions at trial.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys John M. Maciejczyk and Joel Gabrielse. U.S. Attorney David Capp, of the Northern District of Indiana, emphasized that crimes involving kidnapping and armed violence will be met with the full force of federal law. Mzembe will serve 44 years in federal prison, followed by one year of supervised release.
