Gary Woman Gets 17.5 Years for Brutal Kidnapping
HAMMOND, IN – Patricia Carrington, 48, of Gary, Indiana, will spend the next 17 and a half years in federal prison after being sentenced to 210 months for a particularly vicious kidnapping. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon, following Carrington’s guilty plea.
The details of the April 14, 2019, crime paint a picture of calculated cruelty. According to court documents, Carrington participated in the abduction of a woman, driven by a desperate attempt to locate a witness who was expected to testify in her son’s pending criminal case. This wasn’t a simple questioning; it was a descent into terror.
Carrington and her accomplices forced the victim into a vehicle at gunpoint. Once inside, the woman was blindfolded, duct-taped, and subjected to a harrowing ride as they drove around, demanding information she didn’t have. When the victim refused to cooperate, the abuse escalated. She was beaten, threatened, and ultimately dragged from the car to a desolate area behind a house. There, she was shot in the face and arm, and left to die.
Miraculously, the victim survived the attack, clinging to life despite the severity of her injuries. The investigation, led by the FBI’s Gang Response Investigative Team, with crucial support from the Gary Police Department, Indiana State Police, and Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, quickly zeroed in on Carrington as a key player in the abduction and attempted murder. The level of violence suggests a cold disregard for human life.
Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas Mahoney and Michael Toth prosecuted the case, successfully securing the lengthy sentence. This prosecution was part of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, a nationwide initiative focused on reducing violent crime through targeted enforcement and community partnerships. PSN isn’t about just locking people up; it’s about a coordinated strategy to address the root causes of violence.
The 210-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, sends a clear message: violent acts like this will not be tolerated. While no sentence can fully repair the damage inflicted on the victim, it offers a measure of justice and hopefully deters others from following a similar path of brutality. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in Northwest Indiana.
