MOBILE, AL – Lindell Vantel Dortch, 41, of Mobile, Alabama, will spend the next 209 months behind bars after being sentenced for a brazen string of armed robberies that terrorized local businesses in the fall of 2021. The sentence, handed down by Chief United States District Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock, reflects the severity of Dortch’s actions and his long history of criminal behavior.
Court documents reveal that Dortch targeted four establishments – a Waffle House and multiple gas stations – in September and October of 2021. Each robbery was meticulously captured on surveillance footage, showing Dortch repeatedly brandishing a black handgun while demanding cash. Detectives with the Mobile Police Department quickly zeroed in on a vehicle used in the getaways, ultimately leading them to Dortch’s apartment.
A search of the apartment yielded damning evidence: the clothing matching the robber’s attire in the surveillance videos, and the very 9mm pistol used to threaten clerks and patrons. Confronted with the evidence, Dortch confessed to the robberies, admitting to netting a total of $5,658.13. But this wasn’t a first-time offense for Dortch. Records show a lengthy rap sheet in Mobile County, including prior convictions for burglary, theft, assault, and various drug offenses.
Those prior felonies automatically made Dortch illegally in possession of the firearm used in the robberies, adding another layer to the federal charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller successfully argued that Dortch’s repeated offenses and dangerous behavior warranted a substantial prison sentence. The judge agreed, ordering not only the 209-month imprisonment but also a five-year term of supervised release upon Dortch’s eventual release.
The supervised release terms are stringent, including mandatory drug testing, a comprehensive mental health evaluation and treatment plan, and restrictions on Dortch’s financial activities. Judge Beaverstock also mandated that Dortch pay $5,658.13 in restitution to the victims of his crimes and a $600 special assessment fee. The black 9mm pistol used in the robberies has been forfeited to the United States government.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentencing, praising the collaborative effort of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Mobile Police Department in bringing Dortch to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder that those who choose to prey on businesses and citizens with violence will face the full force of the law.
