A Rosebud man is staring down a federal prison sentence after being indicted on charges tied to the distribution of methamphetamine across the reservation. Lloyd One Star, 26, was hit with one count of Distribution of a Controlled Substance and another of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, according to a federal indictment unsealed in November 2016.
The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on November 9, 2016, alleges that between January 1, 2015, and March 7, 2016, One Star knowingly and intentionally distributed a mixture containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine. On the final date of that timeframe — March 7, 2016 — he and a co-defendant were accused of possessing the drug with intent to distribute, marking a critical escalation in the alleged criminal activity.
One Star appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 28, 2016, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges, is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota, signaling federal authorities’ continued crackdown on drug trafficking in tribal jurisdictions.
If convicted, One Star faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in federal custody and/or a $250,000 fine. The court may also impose three years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and restitution — the amount of which has not yet been determined.
The investigation was led by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, underscoring growing collaboration between tribal authorities and federal prosecutors in combating the spread of methamphetamine in South Dakota’s Native communities. The drug has ravaged rural reservations for years, fueling violence, addiction, and instability.
One Star was released on bond and remains free pending trial, which is scheduled for January 24, 2017. The charges are presumed allegations under federal law, and he is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
