Baltimore Bank Robber Sentenced to 70 Months in Federal Prison

Lloyd Phillip Simon, a 71-year-old Baltimore man, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for committing two bank robberies at the same bank within a week.

According to court documents, Simon robbed the bank on August 13, 2019, and again on August 19, 2019. In the first robbery, Simon entered the bank wearing a black backpack and demanded money from a bank teller, stating "Give me that money. I have a gun. No dye packs." The teller complied, and Simon left the bank with a large amount of cash.

In the second robbery, Simon sat outside the bank for about 10 minutes, waiting for the security guard to leave for a break. He then entered the bank, wearing large glasses and a baseball cap to obscure his face. The bank teller immediately recognized Simon from the previous robbery and pressed the panic button. Simon demanded money from another teller, stating "Give me all of your money, I want the big stuff!" before leaving the bank with more cash.

Simon was arrested and charged with bank robbery after investigators recovered evidence from his apartment, including clothes that matched the clothing worn during the robberies and a black backpack similar to the one used in the first robbery. A single round of .357 ammunition was also found in Simon’s kitchen cabinet.

Simon has a prior conviction for bank robbery, having been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison in 2013. He will now serve 70 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release, and will pay restitution in the amount of $2,034.

U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron commended the FBI and the Baltimore Police Department for their work in the investigation, and thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christine Duey and Mary W. Setzer for prosecuting the case.

Simon’s sentence is a reminder that bank robbery is a serious crime with serious consequences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement to bring bank robbers to justice and keep our communities safe.
