St. Croix, USVI – Fernando Cabret III, a 30-year-old resident of St. Croix, has been sentenced to three months of home confinement after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana. According to court records, Cabret was arrested on August 14, 2013, after federal agents and Task Force officers searched his home pursuant to a warrant and seized 23 rooted and eight cut or up-rooted marijuana plants, small amounts of processed marijuana and marijuana cultivation equipment.
Cabret initially faced charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, but later pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana. He was sentenced by Chief District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis to three months of home confinement, a fine of $2,500.00, $25.00 special assessment, and one year of federal supervised release. Additionally, Cabret was ordered to complete 60 hours of community service, where he will speak publicly about the crime he committed, the consequences he suffered, and how his life has changed.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rhonda Williams-Henry. This sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of marijuana possession and the importance of adhering to local and federal laws.
Cabret’s arrest and subsequent sentencing are a prime example of the efforts being made to combat marijuana-related crimes in the US Virgin Islands. As the community continues to grapple with the issue of marijuana possession, it is essential to remember the potential consequences of being caught.
The sentence handed down to Cabret is a clear indication of the severity with which the court views marijuana-related offenses. Those who are found guilty of such crimes can expect to face significant penalties, including fines, community service, and supervised release.
In a statement, Chief Judge Lewis emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. ‘The sentence imposed on Mr. Cabret reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions,’ she said.
