New York Attorney General Letitia James has dropped a bombshell by releasing disturbing body-worn camera footage from the fateful encounter that led to the tragic death of Nancy Loftus.
The incident unfolded in Orange County on April 12, 2025. Ms. Loftus died following an encounter with members of the New York State Police (NYSP) after responding to a call about an assault with a knife. Footage from the body cameras worn by troopers has been made public at the Attorney General’s directive for transparency.
The video captures the moment when troopers arrived on scene and instructed Ms. Loftus to drop what appeared to be a gun. Despite repeated commands, the situation escalated quickly as troopers discharged their service weapons, resulting in Ms. Loftus’s death. She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, with officers recovering a pellet gun from the scene.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is assessing the incident to determine if any police officer may have caused her death. The release of this footage does not indicate any opinion on guilt or innocence in a criminal matter but serves as a critical piece of evidence for the ongoing investigation.
