Kenner Woman, LOIS MCCORKLE, Sentenced for Theft of Government Funds
A Kenner woman, LOIS MCCORKLE, has been sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution after pleading guilty to theft of government funds. In a shocking turn of events, MCCORKLE, 68, was receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) when she failed to notify them of her change in marital status.
According to court records, MCCORKLE married on November 17, 2001, but did not report her new marital status to the SSA. This resulted in her receiving SSI benefits to which she knew she was not entitled. The total value of these benefits came out to be approximately $105,320.
The SSA’s Office of Inspector General investigated this matter and praised U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans for his work in prosecuting the case. Assistant United States Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen is in charge of the prosecution.
As part of her sentence, MCCORKLE will have to pay restitution in the amount of $105,320.98 to the Social Security Administration. This is a significant blow to the woman who had been receiving government funds under false pretenses.
