Loretta J. Reckart, Embezzlement from WVU, West Virginia 2010

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A massive embezzlement scheme has landed Bruceton Mills resident Loretta J. Reckart behind bars. The 55-year-old woman was convicted of stealing $87,529 from West Virginia University (WVU), according to Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen.

Reckart admitted to the theft while employed by WVU in Monongalia County from October 2010 to July 2016. The embezzlement charge against her was ‘Theft Concerning Programs Receiving Federal Funds,’ a serious offense with severe penalties.

The defendant now faces up to ten years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000. The final sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offenses and any prior criminal history, if applicable.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert H. McWilliams led the prosecution on behalf of the government, while the United States Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General conducted the investigation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the proceedings.

This conviction is a stark reminder of the damage white-collar crimes can cause within educational institutions. WVU has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but this case is expected to shake the university community and lead to stricter internal controls to prevent such incidents in the future.
