Violence Erupts in Baltimore as Attorney General Loretta Lynch Weighs In
Law and Order has been disrupted in Baltimore, Maryland, as a wave of senseless violence has left a trail of destruction and harm to law enforcement officers.
According to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, the perpetrators of these violent actions are doing a disservice to the family and loved ones of Freddie Gray, who died in custody, and to the peaceful protestors working to improve their community.
Lynch condemned the violence, stating, ‘I condemn the senseless acts of violence by some individuals in Baltimore that have resulted in harm to law enforcement officers, destruction of property and a shattering of the peace in the city of Baltimore.’
The Attorney General emphasized the importance of nonviolence, urging every member of the Baltimore community to adhere to this principle. Lynch stated, ‘As our investigative process continues, I strongly urge every member of the Baltimore community to adhere to the principles of nonviolence.’
In a show of support for the city, the Civil Rights Division and the FBI have launched an independent criminal civil rights investigation into Gray’s death. The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services has also been reviewing the Baltimore City Police Department, and the Community Relations Service has been working with all parties to reduce tensions and promote safety.
Lynch has announced plans to travel to Baltimore, along with Vanita Gupta and Ronald Davis, to meet with faith and community leaders and city officials. The Attorney General intends to work with leaders to ensure the security and civil rights of all residents, and to bring the full resources of the government to bear in protecting those under threat and investigating wrongdoing.
The people of Baltimore demand justice and accountability, and it is the responsibility of the government to provide it. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the violence must stop, and the community must come together to rebuild and move forward.
