Jamie Shelby, Jr., Fentanyl Trafficking, Kentucky 2024

Two Louisville men have been sentenced to decades in prison for their role in a massive fentanyl ring. Jamie Shelby, Jr., 26, and Kevon Smith, 25, were found guilty of conspiracy to possess fentanyl with intent to distribute, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

According to court documents, Shelby Jr. was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release. Shelby Jr. had previous convictions for conspiracy to commit robbery and domestic battery committed in the presence of a child. ‘These defendants earned every second of the sentences imposed,’ said U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner. ‘The pattern of fentanyl pouring into our community must stop.’

The investigation, which involved controlled purchases and a search warrant at Shelby Jr.’s residence, resulted in the seizure of over 17,000 fentanyl pills and four firearms.

‘Counterfeit pharmaceuticals laced with deadly doses of fentanyl continue to devastate our communities,’ said DEA Special Agent in Charge Jim Scott. ‘But thanks to strong partnerships, the dangerous criminals responsible for this poison have been taken off our streets.’

The DEA, ATF Louisville Field Division, Louisville Metro Police Department, Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, St. Matthews Police Department, and Anderson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Erwin Roberts prosecuted it.
