Lower Brule Man Charged with Assaulting Federal Officer
A federal grand jury indicted Dru Peterson, age 26, of Lower Brule, South Dakota, for assaulting, resisting, and impeding a federal officer, according to a grand jury indictment announced by U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson.
According to the indictment, Peterson interfered with several officers while they were engaged in the performance of their official duties as federal law enforcement officers on September 3, 2013. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 20 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Peterson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on December 3, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment. He was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case. The charge is merely an accusation, and Peterson is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
As the people of South Dakota demand justice, the community is left wondering what led to this point. In a statement, U.S. Attorney Johnson said, ‘We will continue to vigorously pursue those who interfere with federal law enforcement officers.’
Peterson’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting the rule of law and the sacrifices made by federal law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve our communities.
The case is being closely watched by law enforcement officials and the public alike, who are eager to see justice served. As the investigation unfolds, one thing is clear: the people of South Dakota will not tolerate any form of disrespect towards their law enforcement officers.
