Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced to 10+ Years in Prison for LSD Conspiracy
A Cedar Rapids man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison for his role in a 1992 LSD conspiracy that saw him distribute thousands of hits of the potent hallucinogen in the city.
Matthew West, 50, was sentenced to 121 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in June 2015, nearly 23 years after he was first convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD).
According to evidence presented at trial, West obtained around 12,000 hits of LSD from out-of-state sources between October 1990 and October 1991. He then sold the LSD to others who redistributed it in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
West was initially ordered detained pending sentencing after his guilty verdict, but was released in August 1993 when a request for a new trial was granted. However, when West failed to appear for a detention hearing in April 1994, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He turned himself in on that warrant on December 27, 2014, nearly 20 years after going on the run.
Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Marion Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
West was also fined $6,000 and must serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
