Lucas Russell Vanwoert, a 27-year-old man from Celina, Ohio, has been sentenced to 97 months in prison for creating and distributing animal crushing videos and possessing child pornography. U.S. District Judge James R. Knepp, II handed down the sentence on [date].
According to court documents, Vanwoert created an animal crush video in 2022 with the intent to distribute. An animal crush video is defined as any photograph, motion picture, film, video or digital recording, or electronic image that depicts actual conduct in which one or more living non-human mammals, birds, reptiles, or amphibians is intentionally crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury, or bestiality and is obscene.
Authorities seized three severely emaciated dogs and one recently deceased dog from the backyard of Vanwoert’s residence during an executed search warrant. The dogs were found to be victims of abuse. Several electronic devices were also seized, which contained videos of child pornography involving prepubescent children, as well as animal crush videos.
Vanwoert was also found to have used at least one of his dogs to create the animal crush videos. The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations Agent Jason Guyton. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sara Al-Sorghali and Michelle M. Baeppler.
As part of his sentence, Vanwoert is required to serve 15 years of supervised release, register as a sex offender, and is prohibited from owning or possessing a pet in the future. The sentence is a result of Vanwoert’s blatant disregard for animal welfare and his creation and distribution of child pornography.
The case serves as a reminder of the severity of animal cruelty and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. We hope that this sentence will bring justice to the victims and serve as a deterrent to others who would commit such heinous crimes.
