Tampa, Florida – A Mexican national has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for violating U.S. immigration laws.
Luis David Huerta-Carranza, 40, was sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara following a stipulated bench trial on March 5, 2020.
Huerta-Carranza was found guilty of reentering the United States after being removed five times since 1998, most recently on December 13, 2019, following his arrest for driving under the influence and not having a valid driver’s license.
According to court documents, Huerta-Carranza was previously convicted of illegal reentry in 2017 and served two years in federal prison.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement Entry and Removal Operations investigated the case, and Assistant United States Attorney David C. Waterman handled the prosecution.
With this sentence, Huerta-Carranza faces the full weight of U.S. immigration laws and the consequences of repeatedly violating them.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of enforcing our nation’s immigration laws and holding accountable those who disregard them.
As a nation, we must prioritize the safety and security of our citizens, and this sentence sends a strong message that those who engage in illegal reentry will be held accountable.
