Felon in Possession of Firearms and Ammunition Lands 28-Year-Old Hammond Man in Prison

Hammond, Indiana – In a shocking turn of events, Latrell McGee, 28, of Hammond, Indiana, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

According to court documents, on March 2, 2020, McGee was found to be in possession of a firearm and purchased ammunition at a Merrillville, Indiana gun range. A traffic stop on March 27, 2020, led to law enforcement seizing the firearm McGee possessed on March 2nd.

McGee’s criminal history reveals a prior felony conviction for battery, which precludes him from possessing any firearm and ammunition. This egregious disregard for the law has landed him in prison for the next 7 years.

U.S. Attorney Clifford D. Johnson praised the work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the East Chicago Police Department in bringing McGee to justice.

This case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts.

PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.

As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
