Luis Enrique Flores, Methamphetamine Distribution and Failure to Appear, Texas 2005

Laredo Man Sentenced for Methamphetamine Distribution

Luis Enrique Flores, a 44-year-old resident of Laredo, Texas, has been sentenced to federal prison after a lengthy fugitive status, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez.

Flores pleaded guilty on May 6, 2005, to possessing with intent to distribute more than four kilograms of methamphetamine.

However, in August 2005, Flores was released on bond, but he failed to appear for his hearings or report to pretrial services. Flores remained a fugitive for over 10 years until his arrest on June 5, 2017. He pleaded guilty to a charge of failure to appear on July 31, 2017.

Today, U.S. District Judge Diana Saldana ordered Flores to serve a total of 108 months in federal prison – 100 months for the drug conviction followed by a consecutive sentence of eight months imprisonment for the failure to appear. Flores will also serve a five-year-term of supervised release following completion of his sentence.

Flores has been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the original drug investigation, while the U.S. Marshals Service and its Fugitive Task Force investigated the charges of failure to appear. Assistant U.S. Attorney José Angel Moreno is prosecuting the case.

According to court documents, Flores’ crimes carry significant penalties. The original charge of possessing with intent to distribute more than four kilograms of methamphetamine carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $10 million fine. The charge of failure to appear carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

Flores’ case is a prime example of the U.S. government’s commitment to bringing fugitives to justice, no matter how long it takes.
