Defendant Fails to Serve Time, Receives Harsher Sentence
LUIS PADILLA, 39, formerly of Waterbury, has been handed a harsher sentence after escaping from a halfway house in Bloomfield. On June 10, 2024, Padilla pleaded guilty to escape from the custody of the Attorney General.
According to court documents, Padilla was originally sentenced to 78 months of imprisonment for conspiring with others to traffic narcotics from Connecticut to Maine on February 27, 2018. He was transferred from a federal prison in West Virginia to the Drapelick Center, a Residential Reentry Center (halfway house) in Bloomfield, to complete his custodial sentence on March 17, 2021.
However, on June 1, 2022, Padilla walked out of the Drapelick Center and never returned. He was located and arrested in Bangor, Maine, on April 5, 2024.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer sentenced Padilla to 12 months and one day of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. This matter was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rahul Kale.
Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced the sentencing. Avery emphasized the importance of serving one’s sentence and the consequences of failing to do so.
The case serves as a reminder that the justice system is not to be taken lightly. Padilla’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the consequences that come with it.
