Birmingham Man Charged in Major Drug Bust
A major blow has been dealt to the city’s underworld as federal authorities unsealed a 10-count indictment against Lumon Andre Layton, aka ‘Loom’, and his lieutenant, Cedric Lamar Nelson, aka ‘Ced’, in connection with a massive drug trafficking operation in Jefferson County.
The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Carlton L. Peeples, charges Layton, 49, of Birmingham, and Nelson, 36, of Midfield, with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, as well as distribution of fentanyl between March 2022 and January 2023.
Layton, a convicted felon with a history of violent crime, faces additional charges of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, as well as using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to drug trafficking crimes. He was previously convicted of manslaughter in 2000 and has prior convictions for drug crimes in Jefferson County.
According to the indictment, on January 6, 2023, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies executed four search warrants on properties linked to the conspiracy, seizing $1,088,000 in cash and five firearms. The penalty for the conspiracy charge ranges from 10 years to life in prison, while the maximum penalty for the distribution charges is life in prison.
The FBI and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Cross handling the prosecution. An indictment is merely an accusation, and Layton and Nelson are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to dismantle the operation and bring those responsible to justice. The indictment marks a significant victory in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in Jefferson County.
