Lyle Woody Begay, a 34-year-old man, has pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact in Indian Country. He committed the crime between February 23, 2004, and December 31, 2011, in San Juan County, New Mexico, within the exterior boundaries of the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation.
According to the plea agreement, Begay intentionally and unlawfully caused sexual contact with a minor under the age of twelve with the intent to abuse, humiliate, harass, degrade, arouse, or gratify sexual desire.
Begay is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation and has admitted to the crime in a plea agreement. He is currently in custody awaiting sentencing and faces 10 to 15 years in prison under the terms of his plea agreement.
Begay must also register as a sex offender upon his release from prison. The Gallup office of the FBI and the Navajo Nation Criminal Investigations unit investigated this case, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Novaline D. Wilson and Kyle T. Nayback are prosecuting the case.
The investigation revealed that Begay committed the crime over an eight-year period, from February 23, 2004, to December 31, 2011. During this time, he allegedly engaged in abusive sexual contact with a minor under the age of twelve.
Begay’s plea agreement is a significant step in holding him accountable for his actions. The sentence he faces reflects the severity of his crime and the harm he caused to the victim.
As Begay awaits sentencing, he remains in custody. The outcome of his case will have a significant impact on his future and the community he lives in. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of sex crimes accountable for their actions.
