Rasul Abernathy, Sex Trafficking, Pennsylvania 2013

Pittsburgh, PA – In a disturbing case of human exploitation, Rasul Abernathy, a 33-year-old former Coatesville resident, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sex trafficking a minor. The conviction was made in federal court, with Senior United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak imposing the sentence.

According to court documents, in and around December 2012 to March 2013, Abernathy knowingly recruited, enticed, harbored, transported, provided, and obtained a minor, identified as John Doe, to engage in commercial sex acts. This heinous act is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of human trafficking on innocent victims.

Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, ensuring that justice was served. U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Allegheny County Police Department, and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for their tireless efforts in investigating the case and bringing Abernathy to justice.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.

Abernathy’s sentence is a testament to the efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in combating human trafficking.
