A convicted sex offender has been sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender in Florida, according to a recent sentencing.
Tampa resident Pedro Ramirez (40) pleaded guilty on July 23, 2015, to failing to register as a sex offender, as required under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). This act is part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.
According to court documents, Ramirez was convicted of sexual battery in Hillsborough County in 2002 and was required to register as a sex offender. However, in June 2013, he moved back to Hillsborough County from Connecticut and failed to register in Florida. During his time in Florida, he committed another sex offense against a minor.
The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer L. Peresie.
This case is another example of the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, which is being addressed through the nationwide initiative, Project Safe Childhood. Launched in May 2006, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
Ramirez’s failure to register as a sex offender and subsequent sex offense against a minor demonstrate the importance of registering sex offenders and holding them accountable for their crimes. The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act is in place to protect the public from predators like Ramirez.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of registering sex offenders and the consequences of failing to do so. We must continue to work together to protect our children and communities from sex offenders who fail to register and commit new crimes.
