Belleville Man Sentenced for Child Pornography Crimes
A Belleville man has been sentenced to prison for receiving and possessing child pornography, federal authorities announced.
Michael H. McDaniel, 37, of Belleville, IL, was sentenced to 97 months in prison on each count, to run concurrently, followed by a 10-year term of supervised release. McDaniel was also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment and $1,000 in restitution to one of the victims identified in the child pornography he collected and distributed.
According to the investigation, McDaniel’s electronic devices, including a Hewlett Packard computer and a Hewlett Packard laptop, were seized from his residence and place of employment in April 2016. McDaniel provided a voluntary statement admitting to viewing child pornography in February 2014 and downloading it, but claimed the others living with him did not know.
A forensic review of the computers revealed child pornography, including images of prepubescent children. The review also showed McDaniel received child pornography via the Internet between April 3 and 6, 2015.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The FBI’s Springfield Child Exploitation Task Force investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Angela Scott assigned to prosecute.
McDaniel was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service after the hearing. The case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat child pornography and protect victims.
Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children. For more information, visit www.usdoj.gov/psc.
The Belleville man’s sentencing is a significant step in holding accountable those who engage in child pornography.
