Macy Man Jailed for Bald Eagle Slaying
A 24-year-old man from Macy, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 35 months in prison for his role in the killing of a bald eagle. Antonio Bertucci, 24, was also convicted of habitual domestic abuse in connection with two incidents on the Omaha Indian Reservation.
According to court records, Bertucci was driving a vehicle on the reservation in February 2014 when a passenger shot at two bald eagles. Witnesses reported the incident to the tribal police and game warden, who responded and caught Bertucci after his vehicle broke down. A search of the vehicle revealed a bald eagle carcass in the trunk.
Bertucci was further ordered to serve one year of supervised release for the unlawful killing of a bald eagle. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release for the habitual domestic abuse conviction.
The incidents of domestic abuse occurred on October 2, 2014, and October 13, 2014, and involved Bertucci punching his live-in girlfriend in the face and body. He had two previous convictions for domestic abuse assault in Woodbury County, Iowa.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
Chief United States District Court Judge Laurie Smith Camp handed down the sentence. Bertucci’s attorney was not available for comment.
Bertucci’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of the penalties for crimes against wildlife and domestic abuse.
