A brazen string of mail thefts has come to an end on Memorial Drive in Houston, where a 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with theft of mail and bank fraud.
Tony Morris Jr. was taken into custody today in connection with the thefts, which authorities say occurred on nine separate occasions. The stolen goods, valued at $497,335.53, were allegedly cashed on three occasions.
The checks were stolen from a U.S. Postal Service collection box located on the 12500 block of Memorial Drive. Authorities say vehicles linked to Morris were observed at the location on multiple occasions, leading investigators to believe they were associated with the thefts.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with the assistance of police departments in Memorial Village and Hedwig Village. If convicted, Morris faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a $1 million maximum fine.
A criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of securing personal mail and the potential consequences of mail theft. As authorities continue to investigate, residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
A court date has been scheduled for Morris, who will appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray.
