A Jackson man has been brought to justice after selling an AR-style rifle to the FBI and subsequently being caught with a firearm as a convicted felon.
Malcolm Undrea Spires, 55, sold a semiautomatic AR-style rifle to the FBI on November 22, 2021, as part of a sting operation. The sale was made in violation of federal law.
In addition to the sale, Spires has two prior felony convictions, including one for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. This history landed him in hot water when he was caught with a firearm again.
Spires pled guilty to a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1), which prohibits the possession of firearms by convicted felons. He is set to be sentenced on February 16, 2023, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the sting operation that led to Spires’ guilty plea. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bert Carraway is prosecuting the case.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a joint federal, state, and local initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, stakeholders work together to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in their communities.
Spires’ guilty plea is a major blow to those involved in illicit gun sales and possession. His case serves as a reminder that the consequences of breaking federal law are severe and can have long-lasting impacts on individuals and communities.
