Malcolm Whiteside, Illegally Possessing a Firearm, Wisconsin 2024
MADISON, WIS. – A Fitchburg man is facing up to 15 years in federal prison after a jury found him guilty of illegally possessing a firearm as a felon.
Malcolm Whiteside, 30, was found guilty yesterday after a two-day jury trial. The guilty verdict came after just over 30 minutes of deliberation.
The evidence presented in court showed that Whiteside led police on a high-speed chase on August 12, 2024. He crashed the car he was driving into a semi-truck and then fled on foot to the parking lot of a home improvement store.
A police officer found Whiteside hiding in a garden shed and searched the vehicle he was driving. Inside, officers found a loaded firearm underneath the driver’s floormat.
An analyst from the Wisconsin State Crime Lab later found Whiteside’s DNA on multiple locations on the firearm.
Whiteside had previously been convicted of the same crime in 2019.
Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson has scheduled sentencing for June 25.
The case was investigated by the City of Monona Police, Madison Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Chadwick M. Elgersma and Collen Lennon are handling the prosecution.
