Defendant Sentenced to 19.5 Years in Prison for Murder and Carjacking

A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 19.5 years in prison for his role in a deadly carjacking that left one man dead in Southeast Washington, D.C.

Maleek Thomas, 23, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced Friday in connection to the carjacking that killed Melvin Dock, Jr., on October 30, 2023, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

According to court documents, Thomas and another individual were involved in the deadly carjacking, which resulted in the death of Melvin Dock, Jr.

Thomas was charged with murder and carjacking, and was found guilty by a jury in July 2023.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge for the District of Columbia.

U.S. Attorney Pirro praised the work of law enforcement in bringing the case to a successful conclusion, saying ‘This sentence is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the detectives and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to ensure that justice was served.’

The family of Melvin Dock, Jr. also released a statement, saying ‘We are grateful that the court has held Maleek Thomas accountable for his actions. We hope that this sentence will bring some closure to our family and the community.’

Thomas will serve his 19.5 year sentence at a federal correctional facility. He has been in custody since his arrest in 2023.
