Malek M. Al Maliki, Illicit Sexual Conduct with Children, Ohio 2010

A Cleveland man has been charged with traveling abroad and engaging in illicit sexual conduct with minors, according to a recent indictment.

Malek M. Al Maliki, 55, was arrested on March 6 for his alleged involvement in these crimes.

According to the indictment, Al Maliki traveled from the United States to Syria between August 15, 2010, and November 8, 2010, and engaged in illicit sexual conduct with two minors.

The indictment charges Al Maliki with engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a person under 18 years of age, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2423(b). Additionally, he is charged with attempting to engage in illicit sexual conduct with another minor under the same statute.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan and Trial Attorney Bonnie Kane of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.

The case was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations.

Al Maliki’s sentence will be determined by the court after consideration of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which depend on various factors unique to each case.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial, in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
