Man Charged in Cruel Murder Aboard Cruise Ship
A Topeka man is facing federal charges for allegedly murdering his girlfriend on a cruise ship in January 2018.
Eric Newman, 53, made his initial appearance Thursday on an indictment charging him with murder in the second degree. The indictment alleges that Newman killed Tamara Tucker, 50, of Lawson, Missouri, while they were both on board the Carnival Elation, a foreign vessel registered in Panama, on a voyage with both a scheduled departure from and arrival in Jacksonville, Florida.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Jacksonville Field Office with the assistance of the FBI Topeka Field Office. The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Rami S. Badawy of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine E. Kenney of the District of Kansas.
A detention hearing is scheduled for September 12. An indictment is merely an allegation, and Newman is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The U.S. Attorney Stephen R. McAllister of the District of Kansas and Special Agent in Charge Charles P. Spencer of the FBI Jacksonville, Florida Field Office made the announcement, along with Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
The case highlights the FBI’s commitment to investigating crimes that occur on international waters. The FBI Jacksonville Field Office worked closely with the FBI Topeka Field Office to bring charges against Newman.
Eric Newman is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ross A. Walters for a detention hearing on September 12. The outcome of the case is uncertain, but one thing is clear: justice will be served if Newman is found guilty of this heinous crime.
