Adrian Wells, Sex Offender Registration Violation, South Dakota 2013

A Pierre man is serving time after a federal judge slammed him with 18 months behind bars for violating the terms of his sex offender registration.

Adrian Wells, 37, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on September 11, 2013, for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentence also includes five years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

According to court documents, Wells, who was convicted of Aggravated Sexual Abuse in 1995, failed to register his new residence with law enforcement after signing a lease for an apartment on May 19, 2009. Instead, he continued to use his previous address, even though he did not reside there.

Wells was caught after he registered the previous address with law enforcement on five separate occasions, knowing he was not living at that address. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie Ruettgers prosecuting the case.

Wells’ conviction stems from a charge of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, which he pleaded guilty to on June 25, 2013. He was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 11, 2012.

The U.S. Marshals Service has taken Wells into custody to begin serving his sentence. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with sex offender registration requirements.
