Vernon Chavez, 62, of San Felipe, New Mexico, pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse in federal court, facing 10-15 years in prison.

According to court documents, Chavez admitted to intentionally touching an 11-year-old girl through her clothing with the intent to gratify his sexual desire between August 1 and August 15, 2022. The abuse occurred within the exterior boundaries of the San Felipe Pueblo.

Chavez, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of San Felipe, acknowledged in his plea agreement that he knew the victim was approximately 11 years old at the time of the offense.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez made the announcement today, stating that Chavez was detained pending sentencing, which has not been set.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case, and Assistant United States Attorney Jesse Pecoraro is prosecuting the case.

Chavez’s plea agreement marks a significant step towards justice for the victim and their family. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
